What is Queer Fashion?

That is the question.
And how do we answer that question?

Well, firstly, what does queer actually mean?

Stonewall - a leading charity dedicated to fighting for the rights of LGBTQ+ people around the world, and educating on LGBTQ+ issues and struggles - define 'queer' identities as "those wanting to reject specific labels of romantic orientation, sexual orientation and/or gender identity". Whilst the term 'queer' itself did originate as a derogatory term for those who did not identify as heterosexual or cisgendered, many have reclaimed the word and gave it it's own new, refreshing meaning, and use it openly and proudly to represent themselves and their identity.

If you've never come across the term queer before, or fancy a little bit more education, I definitely recommend checking out some of the links below:

And now...onto fashion!

Queer fashion encapsulates many different aspects of the queer lifestyle. It is how we as queer people express ourselves. Find truth in our identities. Cloud ourselves in affirmation via clothing. So to give it a specific definition is very much difficult. You could however, say it exists outside of the binary; it combats gender roles, mixes the masculine and feminine, or heightens one or the other depending on the wearer, explores sizes and cuts on varying body types, and goes beyond 'conventional style'.

It's personal, and unique, and pretty thrilling when you find a style that just feels you.

Giving queer fashion a binary definition is - in itself - a tad ironic. We're giving the un-labelable labels, the putting the un-boxable into boxes. But that box, can be whatever the individual wants. That box can be made up of just about anything affirming and comforting, it is as customisable as clothing is. And that is all.

It is simply fashion, and style, and expression of self, all existing together, in the comfort of the wearer.

Queer fashion is JUST fashion, but a bit gayer, and your mum probably says "well, you have your own style" whenever she see's you (I'm looking at you, Angela).

Some of my current favourite queer fashion icons:

Cody Frost (@codyfrostmusic): musician & tattoo artist
I love a brand, and Cody by far knows their brand. And that brand, is RED. Very much inspired by their commitment, definitely give her page a look. His music also slaps.

Clara Perlmutter (@tinyjewishgirl): fashion student & online content creator
I adore the way Clara plays with femininity! Also, mixing prints and designs and cuts the way she does and making them look so fashionable is a talent I wish I had.

And the newest addition

Dakota Schiffer (@dakota.schiffer):  drag performer & current contestant on rpdr uk s4
I have no words other than; gorgeous. Truly, stunningly, gorgeous, both in and out of drag.

I hope you've enjoyed my lil ramble piece! <3

Stay true!
